Student COVID-19 Testing
COVID-19 testing is provided for University of Alabama students who are experiencing virus symptoms or who might have been exposed to the virus. Exposure means being within six feet of someone who might have COVID-19 for more than 15 minutes and with either person not wearing a face mask.
WEEKEND TESTING: The Student Health Center and Pharmacy will be open Saturday, Oct. 24 and Sunday, Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. COVID testing is available for symptomatic students seeking care. Telemedicine visits are encouraged, and students should call 205-348-0386 for an appointment. No drive-thru COVID-19 testing will be held.
Students may visit the SHC website for updates and current hours of operation.
WEEKDAY TESTING: COVID-19 testing for symptomatic or students who have been exposed will be at Coleman Coliseum Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Bring your health insurance card, ACT card, CWID and driver’s license.
COVID-19 symptoms include cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain or body aches, new loss of taste or smell, unexplained headache, sore throat, nausea and diarrhea. Symptoms include trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in chest, bluish lips or face, new confusion, or the inability to wake or stay awake.

Distance learning students who will not be on campus for any reason this fall are not required to be tested for COVID-19 at this time. However, those planning to return to campus in any capacity will need to be tested. Completion of the training learning plans and participation in HealthCheck is strongly encouraged for everyone, but not required for those not immediately returning to campus.

Sentinel testing involves the random sampling of all asymptomatic students, faculty and staff to understand the underlying prevalence of infection on campus so we can respond promptly to outbreaks or increases in infection rates. Our goal is to test around 3% of the campus population each week. Sentinel testing is required for students who live on campus, participate in club sports, are members of a student organization holding meetings with more than 10 people, or are participating in clinical activities, provided the student also has or will have a presence on campus.
For-cause testing is for individuals in a shared geographic area, such as a residence hall floor, Greek house, student group or a class. It is conducted when campus health officials determine the need based on data trends. It is mandatory, and anyone who declines to participate will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct.
If you test positive
Those who test positive must follow the isolation and quarantine protocols. You must receive clearance from a health care provider before you return. For more information contact the COVID-19 hotline at (205) 348-CV19 (2819).
IF YOU HAVE TESTED POSITIVE THIS SEMESTER:
- You don’t need a negative test to come out of isolation
- Finish your isolation and be cleared by your case manager
- You should not need another test or isolation/quarantine this semester
Why testing is needed
The University’s ability to test every student entering campus this fall will go a long way in helping us maintain a safe environment. On our campus, testing will supplement other strategies to maintain a safe environment such as face coverings and physical distancing as well as daily symptom and exposure reporting. Faculty and staff are also being tested.
