CARES Act 30 Report (HEERF I)
1. An acknowledgment that the institution signed and returned to the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution has used, or intends to use, no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
The University of Alabama acknowledges that it signed and returned the Certification and Agreement to receive funds under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students on May 12, 2020. The University further affirms that it will disburse no less than 50% of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act directly to students who attest to incurring expenses related to the disruption of UA campus operations due to the coronavirus.
2. The total amount of funds that the institution will receive or has received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement [for] Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.
The University of Alabama has or will receive a total of $20,722,538.00 of which $10,361,269.00 or 50% will be issued directly to students for Emergency Financial Aid Grants.
3. The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of the date of submission (i.e., as of the 30-day Report and every 45 days thereafter).
The University of Alabama’s first 30-day reporting period ends June 17, 2020. As of June 17, 2020, The University of Alabama has distributed directly to students a total of $7,226,700.00.
The University of Alabama’s 45-day reporting period ends July 31, 2020. As of July 31, 2020, The University of Alabama has distributed directly to students a total of $9,689,250.00.
The University of Alabama’s final reporting period ended on August 24, 2020. As of August 24, 2020, The University of Alabama has distributed directly to students a total of $10,361,269.00. This completes the distribution of CARES Act allocation for The University of Alabama.
4. The estimated total number of students at the institution eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
As of June 16, 2020, The University of Alabama has a total of 15,750 students that are eligible for Title IV funding and therefore eligible for CARES Act funding.
As of July 31, 2020, The University of Alabama has a total of 15,785 students that are eligible for Title IV funding and therefore eligible for CARES Act funding.
As of August 24, 2020, The University of Alabama has a total of 15,785 students that are eligible for Title IV funding and therefore eligible for CARES Act funding.
5. The total number of students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
As of June 17, 2020, a total of 6,402 students have responded and received CARES Act funding.
As of July 31, 2020, a total of 9,660 students have responded and received CARES Act funding.
As of August 24, 2020, a total of 10,310 students have responded and received CARES Act funding.
6. The method(s) used by the institution to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
Consistent with Department of Education (DOE) policy and guidance, CARES Act funds will be distributed based on a student’s eligibility for Title IV funding. The Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) calculated by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2019-2020 is used as the determining factor. The greatest allocation of funds will be disbursed to those students with the highest level of need using a tiered approach. Any student completing a FAFSA by June 30, 2020 will be considered until all funds are exhausted.
The initial distribution within the first 30-day period considered students with an EFC from 00000 to 10000, the second distribution included students with an EFC up to 50,000 and the third distribution included all eligible students using the following allocations:

The University of Alabama created the following website to inform students of CARES Act Activity. This website outlines the eligibility criteria for the funds, the distribution method used to determine which students would receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive, and Frequently Asked Questions.
Beginning on June 2, 2020, eligible students were notified by email from UA Student Financial Aid of the maximum allocation for their tier of EFC. They were required to legally attest to the actual amount of expenses incurred, up to their maximum allocation, or choose to decline receipt of funds. Once attested to by the student, the CARES Act funds were disbursed directly to the student by Student Account Services. Students were given 14 calendar days to respond. Non-responders were reminded by email of the 14-day timeframe Any student that accidentally selected an incorrect amount was reset upon request and allowed to select the correct amount.
Copies of these communications will be provided to the Secretary of the United States Department of Education upon request.
HEERF II Reporting
HEERF II reporting was last updated on July 9, 2021.
CRRSAA Student Report (HEERF II)
1. An acknowledgement that the institution signed and returned to the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution has used, or intends to use, no less than $10,361,269 of the funds received under Section 314(a)(1) of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA, Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II(HEERF II) to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
The University of Alabama acknowledges that it signed and returned the Certification and Agreement to receive funds under Section 314(a)(1) of the CRRSAA to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students on February 19, 2021. The University further affirms that it will disburse to students the same amount in financial aid grants from the CRRSAA funds that it was required to provide under its original Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) Student Aid Portion award who attest to eligibility related to the disruption of UA campus operations due to the coronavirus.
2. The total amount of funds that the institution will receive or has received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement [for] Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.
The University of Alabama has or will receive a total of $31,436,739.00 in HEERF II funds of which $10,361,269.00 will be issued directly to students for Emergency Financial Aid Grants.
3. The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 314(a)(1) of CRRSAA as of the date of submission (i.e., as of the 30-day Report and every 45 days thereafter).
The University of Alabama’s first reporting period includes distribution through March 31, 2021 and is being reported as of June 30, 2021. As of March 31st, The University of Alabama has distributed directly to students a total of $8,273,700.00.
The University of Alabama’s second and final reporting period includes distribution through May 2021 and is being reported as of July 10, 2021. As of May 11, 2021, The University of Alabama has distributed all HEERF II funds directly to students totaling $10,361,269.00. This completes the distribution of HEERF II funding.

As of March 31, 2021, The University of Alabama had a total of 6,585 students that were eligible for Title IV funding and based on the methodology identified in Number 6 below, were therefore eligible for HEERF II funding.
As of May 11, 2021, The University of Alabama had a total of 7,991 students that were eligible for Title IV funding and based on the methodology identified in Number 6 below, were therefore eligible for HEERF II funding.
5. The total number of students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under Section 314(a)(1) of the CRRSAA.
As of March 31, 2021, a total of 5,214 students have responded and funds distributed accordingly.
As of May 11, 2021, a total of 6,880 students have responded and funds distributed accordingly.
6. The method(s) used by the institution to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 314(a)(1) of the CRRSAA.

Once attested to by the student, the HEERF II funds were disbursed directly to the student by Student Account Services, unless the student selected in writing to have the funds applied to his/her student account balance. Non-responders were reminded by email until all funds were distributed. Any student who accidentally selected an incorrect answer was reset upon request and allowed to select the correct answer.

HEERF III Reporting
ARPA Student Report (HEERF III)
1. An acknowledgment that the institution signed and returned to the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution has used the applicable amount of funds designated under ARP (a)(1) programs to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.
The University of Alabama acknowledges that it signed and returned the Certification and Agreement to receive funds under Section 314(a)(1) of the American Rescue Plan Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students on May 12, 2020. The University further affirms that it will disburse to students the applicable amount of funds designated from the American Rescue Plan Act student aid portion to students who attest to eligibility related to the disruption of UA campus operations due to the coronavirus.
2. The total amount of funds that the institution will receive or has received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students under ARP (a)(1) programs.
The University of Alabama has or will receive a total of $54,903.000 in HEERF III funds of which, a minimum of $27,742,189 will be issued directly to students for Emergency Financial Aid Grants.
3. The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under the ARP (a)(1) programs as of the date of submission (i.e., as of the initial report and every calendar quarter thereafter).
The University of Alabama’s first reporting period includes distribution through September 30, 2021 and is being reported as of October 10, 2021. As of September 30, 2021, The University of Alabama has distributed directly to students a total of $27,159,300.
The University of Alabama’s final reporting period includes distribution through October 30, 2021 and is being reported as of January 10, 2022. As of October 30, 2021, The University of Alabama has distributed directly to students a total of $27,742,189.
4. The estimated total number of students at the institution eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under ARP(a)(1) programs.
As of September 30, 2021, The University of Alabama had a total of 35,579 students that were eligible based on the methodologies identified in Number 6 below and were therefore eligible for HEERF III funding. A total of 18,961 students were identified as having exceptional need based upon their EFC range, and 1,997 students applied for funding through the Student Care and Well-Being process, identifying themselves as having exceptional need.
As of January 10, 2022, The University of Alabama had a total of 35,579 students that were eligible based on the methodologies identified in Number 6 below and were therefore eligible for HEERF III funding. A total of 18,985 students were identified as having exceptional need based upon their EFC range, and 2,552 students applied for funding through the Student Care and Well-Being process, identifying themselves as having exceptional need.
5. The total number of students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under ARP (a)(1) programs.
As of September 30, 2021, a total of 13,264 students have responded and funds distributed accordingly.
As of January 10, 2022, a total of 14,433 students have responded and funds distributed accordingly.
6. The method(s) used by the institution to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under ARP (a)(1) programs.
HEERF III funds will be distributed based on two separate methods: a student’s eligibility for Title IV funding and a student application process for those that do not complete a FAFSA.
The Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) calculated by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2021-2022 is used as the determining factor for those eligible for Title IV funding with a completed FAFSA. The greatest allocation of funds will be disbursed to those students with the highest level of need using a tiered approach. Any student completing a FAFSA by June 30, 2021 will be considered until all funds are exhausted. The initial distribution within the first 30-day period considered students with an EFC from 00000 and up using the following allocations:

Students who did not complete a FAFSA were notified on September 2, 2021 that they would be able to submit an application to UA’s Student Care and Well-Being office to receive funds. The Student Care and Well-Being process distributed funds based on an application asking students what type of financial relief was needed (tuition, food, housing, transportation, course materials, technology, health care, childcare, and/or emergency expenses).

The University of Alabama created the following website to inform students of CARES Act, HEERF II and HEERF III Activity. This website outlines the eligibility criteria for the funds, the distribution method(s) used to determine which students would receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive, and Frequently Asked Questions.
Beginning on September 7, 2021 eligible students were notified by email from UA Student Financial Aid of the maximum allocation for their tier of EFC. They were required to attest to eligibility or decline receipt of funds. Once attested to by the student, the HEERF III funds were disbursed directly to the student or applied to their student account by Student Account Services if the student selected in writing to have the funds applied to his/her student account balance. Any student who accidentally selected an incorrect answer was reset upon request and allowed to select the correct answer.
Also, HEERF III information, application directions and the application to apply for HEERF III funding was made available through the Student Care and Well-Being office at https://bamacares.sa.ua.edu/student-assistance/emergency-assistance/. Students who applied for funds in the Student Care and Well-Being process were also required to attest to eligibility. Once attested to by the student and if deemed eligible, the HEERF III funds were disbursed directly to the student or applied to their student account by Student Account Services if the student selected in writing to have the funds applied to his/her student account balance.
